Mystery is not a common genre on the App Store. It’s to be expected, with the prevailing notion of the platform as a casual title haven, but every once in a while a developer will confound expectations and deliver something unexpected and amazing. Like The Room.<br />
<br />
It’s been getting a lot of attention lately, and with good reason: The Room is a magnificent example of lean, tense and engrossing gameplay. Its pocket edition is identical to the iPad version, only optimized for your phone. This means you’ll get the same intuitive touch controls, the same photorealistic graphics, and of course, the same mind boggling creep factor. In fact, The Room is a puzzle game of sorts, but it feels like an adventure.<br />
<br />
It doesn’t overstay its welcome, which might leave some complaining that it’s too short, but if you like what’s being offered then you’re likely to forgive the brevity. Soul of wit, after all. The game is available for free, with the first level, and you can unlock the full game for two dollars if you enjoy the opening. Which you will.<br />

Hundreds<br />
<br />
It’s not going to come as a huge surprise to anyone that the folks behind the genius Canabalt have come up with a new game, nor that it’s superb. But there’s still room to be surprised by just how different and clever their new puzzle game, Hundreds, has turned out to be.<br />
<br />
Like a gorgeous, minimalistic, multi-touch meditation, Hundreds offers a simple goal: grow circles by holding them until their sum adds up to one hundred. What begins as a simple matter of holding until the counter reaches 100, quickly morphs into a more complicated affair involving razor blades, collisions, timing and a bit of strategy. The reason everyone is so enthralled is perhaps because Hundreds manages to tap into that primal, sublime zone in the gaming world that provides a visceral satisfaction of a simple goal achieved with diminishing simplicity.<br />
<br />
Keeping up with its pace is supremely satisfying and, with the clean presentation and accomplished audio, Hundreds manages to assert itself with a dignified authority. It invites you to play and rewards your curiosity and skill — the essence of gaming fulfillment.<br />

Repulze<br />
<br />
While I’m clearly a fan of futuristic racers, Repulze deserves a mention because it approaches the genre in an interesting way … by removing the racing element, for now anyway.<br />
<br />
The game has been designed for release in three “Phases,” the first of which is out now. This Phase is geared toward a solo-play, time trial experience that challenges you to achieve the fastest possible speeds with the six currently available hovering vehicles. While this might seem like an odd way to handle things, it makes a great deal of sense; not only will the jaw-droopingly smooth gameplay and presentation build anticipation for the remaining Phases, but the fact that you’re forced to start with these time trials emphasizes the importance of becoming skilled at the game in preparation for multiplayer and the true racing.<br />
<br />
For some, it might be frustrating to have to wait, but I for one am happy to do so given the craftsmanship on display here. I cannot overstate how impressively the 60 fps, 3D environments are rendered or how immersive the sense of speed is. That and the lack of IAP to cheat your way to better performance clearly indicate a developer whose interest is in creating a challenging, honest gaming experience. That’s something worth celebrating, and if you like racing at all then Repulze will find a permanent spot in your games folder.<br />

Swing King<br />
<br />
Swing King is another Angry Birds hybrid, but plays almost like an homage to Rayman as well.<br />
<br />
By flinging the bouncy, furry king of the game’s world, you’ll bash obstacles, avoid traps, collect power-ups, and generally be a hero on your way to save everyone. Complete challenges to unlock hats, and enjoy the variety of puzzles that take place across some beautiful environments. The art style matches the game’s quirky sense of humour, and while the gameplay isn’t hugely innovative, it is very well designed and executed.<br />
<br />
The king’s swinging arm adds a layer of interest to the game, so you’re not just flinging him like a dumb projectile, which makes Swing King a sufficiently creative and charming title to be worth a look.<br />

A Little War<br />
<br />
A Little War is a tiny game with huge ambitions. What begins as a small-scale skirmish between modestly sized forces of troops quickly escalates into an action strategy brawler featuring hundreds of soldiers.<br />
<br />
These soldiers will level up as you use them, and gain skills to improve their chances of success in battle. Swords, guns and hammers are the three available weapon types, and each one has specific strengths and weaknesses vs. other soldiers, so you’ll have to manage your resources a bit to succeed.<br />
<br />
While the game suffers from some localization quirks and has some rough edges, it’s actually a very solid concept brought to life by slick cel-shaded graphics and nice animations. You may not want to spend any money on it at first, but as a freebie it’s certainly worth a try!<br />

CES: Roccat's Power-Grid is almost ready to be switched on

Roccat first showed us the Power-Grid system (that uses an iPhone app 
to control various functions on a PC and the company's PC accessories) 
at CES in 2012 before <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2012/03/06/roccat-introduces-power-grid-a-pc-game-controller-iphone/">officially announcing it last March</a>.
 And now, a year later, the service is almost ready for launch. It's not
 quite good to go, but Roccat kindly showed off the near-finished 
version to us at this week's CES in Las Vegas, and man, is it ever 
impressive.<br />
 <br />
 Before I start going on and on about how just versatile and useful 
Roccat's app will be, I'll get the one major catch out of the way first:
 This product isn't for a Mac. It does of course use an iPhone, but the 
app ties over wi-fi into a desktop app that, Roccat has confirmed, is 
only going to be available for PCs. Mac compatibility is a remote future
 possibility, but Roccat told me that "it will take some time" -- the 
company has a long history of Windows accessory customization, and not 
so much with OS X. So for now, the Power-Grid service will only work 
using the iPhone app to control and PC and the software on it.<br />
 <br />
 But if you do happen to use a PC with your iPhone, you'll love what 
Power-Grid can do. Just as we heard last year, the app will have a 
series of screens with control buttons on them, and those controls will 
hook into PC functions. One screen will be full of various status 
updates (tracking your PC's CPUs, RAM, hard drive space and so on), and 
some of those controls will be interactive (tapping on the C: space 
listing, for example, will open up a Windows Explorer window on the PC 
set to the C: directory).<br />
 <br />
 A sound control screen will offer access to system audio, including the
 main volume as well as sliders for mic volume and other options. 
There's also a controller for your music client that Roccat says will 
work with all of the major players, including iTunes.<br />
 <br />
 Another screen will have updates from various social networks and 
programs like Twitter, Facebook, TeamSpeak, Skype and even RSS feeds, so
 you can browse through everything while a game is running on your PC's 
screen. And a final screen is called the "News Center", and will feature
 a series of curated feeds (including great blogs like TUAW, Joystiq and
 Engadget) and content to include if you want. Any of these tabs can be 
deleted or moved, but those are the main core tabs available to 
everyone.<br />
 <br />
 Where the Power-Grid gets really interesting, however, is after the 
default tabs. First up, Roccat will offer a number of other tabs built 
to offer functionality in various games or apps. I was able to play with
 a Skyrim tab, for example, that offered macro buttons on the iPhone to 
do things like change the game's camera, or bring up the skills or map 
screen automatically. The whole thing was surprisingly responsive: Just 
pull up the Skyrim tab on the iPhone, hit a button and then immediately 
the effects appeared on screen. And thanks to Roccat's experience with 
keyboard macros, the iPhone buttons are very powerful: One button 
toggled moving in the game, and another one attacked with a weapon or 
cast a spell, which put a surprising amount of functionality just on the
 iPhone.<br />
 <br />
 There are also tabs like that planned for League of Legends, Starcraft 
(think of just setting up a production queue by tapping a button on your
 phone), and a number of other games. And there will be a few non-game 
tabs available as well, according to Roccat, including functionality for
 Word, Photoshop and other popular apps.<br />
 <br />
 But even that's not the most interesting part. Tabs can also be custom 
made by users button by button, through a very simple process of first 
setting the button's attributes, and then just dropping and placing it 
on to the tab and syncing up to the iPhone app. Anything you can do on 
your PC with a keyboard can be placed into a button macro, and then you 
can drag and set that button up however you like, turning your iPhone 
into a custom-made controller for your PC. It's really unbelievable, and
 even if you don't have the time or interest to create a custom tab for 
yourself, users will be able to share and favorite tabs online, so you 
can just wait until someone else makes the one you want.<br />
 <br />
 The Power-Grid was an interesting idea when I first heard about it at 
last year's CES, but it's about to become a really incredible reality. 
Roccat said the biggest difficulty right now is getting Apple's approval
 on the whole system, but hopefully we'll see both the PC desktop app 
and the iPhone app (both of which are set up to be free!) available 
within the next few weeks.<br />

I'm an American, but I live in the United Kingdom and travel frequently
 to foreign countries in Europe. If there's one piece of technology that
 has most benefited the international traveler in the last five years 
it's been the iPhone. Having a personal computer in your pocket that 
lets you interact with all facets of your life from anywhere you are is a
 godsend. That's not even to mention the thousands of apps aimed at 
international travels that make exploring cities, translating words and 
languages, and getting you from the train station or airport to your 
hotel in one piece as easy as tapping a button. Since the iPhone is such
 an indispensable piece of travel kit, I'm especially excited to see 
that Apple has begun work on building a location-based emergency 
information app.<br />

<a href="http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/01/10/apple-investigating-location-based-emergency-app-for-iphone">AppleInsider found the patent continuation</a>, published by the US Patent and Trademark Office, on Thursday. Titled "Location-Based Emergency Information" the <a href="http://www.freepatentsonline.com/y2013/0012155.html">patent continuation</a>
 notes that for the international traveler the process of gathering 
emergency services information for a foreign local can be both time 
consuming and confusing. That often leads many travelers to not even 
look into emergency services information until a problem arises -- 
causing a potentially fatal delay. <span style="font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;">From the filing:</span><br />

  "When a person travels abroad, emergencies can occur. For example, the
 person can become injured in an accident, be a victim of a crime or 
lose their travel documents. In those situations, having knowledge of 
contact information for local emergency services or the pertinent 
consular services can be beneficial."<br />

The patent continuation describes a location-aware "Emergency" app that
 would offer international travelers quick access to local police, fire 
or medical assistance. AppleInsider points to one illustration in the 
patent that shows the Emergency app with a drawer that pulls out and 
asks the user to select an icon for which local emergency service they 
would like to contact. The site also speculates that the Emergency app 
would be useful in a user's home country as well. For example, in the US
 the app could direct the user to alternate assistance numbers (like 
311) instead of dialing 911 for situations that are not true 
emergencies.<br />

However, there's no hint that Apple's Emergency app will see the light 
of day any time soon, if ever. Apple holds thousands of patents for 
products and services which never make it into consumers' hands. This is
 one patent, however, that could potentially save lives, so I hope we 
will see it in the App Store eventually.<br />

Read on as we take a first look at these two protective cases for your

The basic case is designed to protect your iPhone 5 well -- it has a 
hard injection molded polycarbonate frame and a elastomer rubber outer 
bumper to provide a high-level of impact and drop protection. If you 
decide that you don't need the extra bulk of the elastomer bumper, it 
can be easily removed to give you a surprisingly thin case.<br />

On the back of the case is an elastomer non-slip grip insert, which not
 only makes it easy to hold onto the case but also keeps your phone from
 moving when it's on a smooth surface. One of the trademark features of 
the Rokform cases is a circular locking mount that can be used with a 
variety of optional accessories. An adhesive-backed mount and magnet kit
 are included with the case, you can also get a bike mount ($69), 
suction mount ($49), sport clip ($29), Rokmeister clip ($29, can also 
open beer bottles!), or an extended tripod adapter ($29). Extra 
adhesive-backed mounting kits can be had for $8, replacement magnet kits
 are $10 and there's even a lanyard ($9) for carrying your iPhone 5 in 
its RokShield case.<br />

RokForm also includes a screen protection film with each case, so all 
of your bases are covered for full protection of your device. The case 
with the magnet kit installed weighs 1.5 ounces, pulling off the outer 
bumper reduces the weight to 1.1 ounces, and removing the magnet kit (it
 just pops out) makes the RokShield a lightweight .9 ounces. That magnet
 works well if you have a need to temporarily stick your iPhone 5 to a 
refrigerator or car!<br />

Locking the RokShield onto any of the mounting accessories is a cinch. 
You just place the back of the case onto the mount and rotate it a few 
degrees clockwise to lock it in securely; reverse the process to remove 
it.<br />

The case comes in three different colors at this time; black and gun 
metal gray, black and blue, and just black. As protective cases go, I 
was very impressed with the RokShield. I like the idea of an affordable 
mounting accessory ecosystem to go along with the case, and the basic 
case is reasonably priced as well.<br />

<h3>
 RokLock v3 iPad Case</h3>
If you like the style of the RokShield iPhone case, you're going to 
love the RokLock v3 iPad case. It doesn't have the elastomer rubber 
outer bumper, but does feature the same thin polycarbonate frame. On the
 back, instead of just the circular mounting lock and a grippy insert, 
you'll find one larger mounting lock and six grippy inserts. Those are 
handy for keeping your iPad from sliding on a slick, tilted surface or 
getting knocked off of a table.<br />

six elastomer grip inserts can be replaced with a $29 Maglok kit that 
provides six rare earth magnets.<br />

The case comes in a variety of colors: gun metal gray, pitch black, 
white hot, translucent aqua, Roksalt (translucent), smoke (translucent 
bluish gray), and raspberry ice (translucent red).<br />

The Rokform products for iPhone 5 and iPad (2nd - 4th generation) are 
well designed and are part of a wide ecosystem of mounting options. The 
RokLock RMS turns mounting an iPad or iPhone on something as easy as a 
quick twist, and the magnetic alignment feature for the iPad case makes 
lining up the case and mount something that could be done with your eyes
 closed.<br />

CES 2013: Viper's way of starting your car with Siri

<a href="http://www.viper.com/">Viper</a>, all set up in a booth on the
 floor of CES 2013 here in Las Vegas, is a company that makes car 
alarms, remote car starters and other automotive accessories. Most of 
the time here at CES, we TUAWers keep our sights on Apple and 
Mac-related booths -- we tend to stay away from the more niche areas 
(like automotive) unless there's good cause to go there. But we went to 
the Viper booth this year because we got promised one thing: We'd get 
shown how to start a car with Siri.<br />

Fortunately, Viper lived up to its promise. The company makes a remote 
car starter called SmartStart, which you can get installed in your car 
at pretty much any dealer that handles such things (Best Buy is probably
 the most common, Viper's rep told us). Once that system is installed, 
which costs you anywhere from US$140 or so up to around $300, depending 
on your vehicle, the local dealer's costs, and all of the other options,
 you can use Viper's free SmartStart app to control the unit in your 
car, which means you can pull up the app and hit buttons to lock or 
unlock the doors, or start the car.<br />

The app's functionality is rather impressive -- if you get the 
Bluetooth model starter installed in your car, it only works via 
Bluetooth of course, but with the official SmartStart model, the app 
actually works over the Internet, so anywhere you have cell phone 
service, the app can control and monitor your car. You could be on 
vacation in Italy, for example, and get a notification when the car 
alarm goes off, or double check that you locked the doors.<br />

While the app's functionality is very cool, the interface on the app is
 just plain hideous. I guess that's about as much as we could expect 
from a car accessory maker, but if they indeed didn't run it by a 
designer or two, the app would certainly benefit from doing so.<br />

But yes, you can start the car from Siri. To do so, you just say 
"SmartStart" into Siri, and then the app will automatically load up (as 
will any app you tell Siri to load), and will run one of three commands:
 You can choose to have it lock your doors, unlock your doors, or, yes, 
start your car. The Viper rep set it to start a little model car in the 
booth, told Siri to "SmartStart," and sure enough, when the app loaded, 
the little model car roared to life.<br />

Yes, if you don't need a remote starter, picking one up just to do this
 is probably a bit too expensive. But it's good to know that it's 2013, 
and if we want to, we can indeed start a car with Siri.<br />

been making cell phone signal boosters for a while now, both for home 
use and for larger scale settings like offices and commercial use. But 
the company is turning to something more personal with its new Sleek 4G 
cell phone booster, which is a phone stand that will make your iPhone's 
signal (or a signal from any phone, really) up to 10 times more 
powerful.<br />

The booster, which is shipping next week, basically consists of a phone
 stand that you can either place on your desk or stick on your car's 
dashboard, and then a cord leading off of it that connects to an antenna
 with a magnetic base. That's it -- you don't need to actually connect 
your phone up at all, because the stand will just grab the signal 
automatically.<br />

The stand itself has a few different prongs on the sides that you can 
adjust depending on what phone you're using, but other than that, it 
just boosts a signal, and well. A normal phone signal, according to

While that's still far from what feature phones can manage, it's a 
significant improvement and would come in handy in many situations. The 
great thing about this case  is how little bulk it adds. It's 15mm thick
 and actually looks quite good. <br />

Another case discussed in the video below is an LED case that's still
 a prototype. It increases your battery life, protects your phone, and 
adds an LED panel to the back of it. The cool thing about the LED panel 
is that you can connect to it with Bluetooth and push custom 
notifications to it.<br />

You can already use the the built-in iPhone flash for alerts, but 
with this case you would get different notifications from each app.<br />

While I don't care about getting better notifications on the back of 
my phone, I'm sure some people will see the benefits of having the LED 
panel.<br />

 rumor resurrection, Bloomberg is reporting that the budget-friendly 
device Apple is working on will cost in the $100-$150 range. It would 
debut, at the very earliest, at the end of this year.<br />
 Apple's 
target with a second-tier iPhone would be developing markets, where 
iPhone costs aren't kept down through the grace of AT&T and can 
typically run more than $700 a unit. Bloomberg's not clear if the price 
it quotes includes carrier subsidies. It's also not clear whether the 
phone will actually ever see the light of day; the report says it would 
appear in late 2013 "at the earliest," and the WSJ was clear that it may
 not happen at all.<br />
 Two things are certain, though. Apple's been 
exploring this line for at least two years, and has lived through two 
cycles of iPhone updates just fine without it. Would a cheaper handset 
fortify Apple against the legions of cheap Android phones in emerging 
markets? Of course it would. But it would also weigh down the aura of 
iPhone invincibility, one that's already taken a hit with the success of

1Password 4 for iPhone and iPad has received its first significant 
update since its release and includes many improvements for sync, 
security, vault and web modes, search, secure notes, and more.<br />

Dropbox and iCloud syncing have been improved in the new 1Password 
4.1 and there also also been new support for USB sync utility added. 
There has also been a few changes made in the Security Settings and a 
new Display Settings section has been added that allows users to choose 
from four different fonts for passwords and toggle whether you wan to 
conceal your passwords or show rich icons for each of your logins.<br />

The new Vault Mode in 1Password 4 has also been improved with new 
gestures and navigation. Now you don't need to tap-and-hold on rows in 
the item detail view to display the menu (you just simply tap, instead) 
and on the iPad, tapping the tab icon twice will take you to the root 
view.<br />

Agiles Bits have also squashed some of the bugs in Web Mode and added
 an option to copy the current URL. Additionally, search has been 
improved by always showing the search bar and on the iPad, you can 
search for items in portrait orientation. Attachments will now also be 
shown in Secure Notes.<br />

SAN FRANCISCO/BEIJING (<a class="hidden_link" href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackboard/reuters">Reuters</a>) - In a revised version of an interview published Thursday in a Chinese newspaper, <a class="hidden_link" href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackboard/apple">Apple</a> Inc marketing chief <a class="hidden_link" href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackboard/phil-schiller">Phil Schiller</a> said the company would focus on making "the best products" for customers and "never blindly pursue market share".<br />

On Thursday, the Shanghai Evening News had originally cited Schiller 
as saying that Apple would not develop a cheaper smartphone for the sake
 of expanding its market share.<br />

That appeared to undermine other recent media reports indicating that
 Apple was working on a low-end smartphone, which would represent a 
significant shift in strategy for a company that has always focused on 
premium products.<br />

But in a new version of the story published after the original, the 
Shanghai Evening News removed all references to cheaper smartphones, 
except for a mention of rumours of a "cheaper, low-end product".<br />

It also amended its original headline from "Apple will not push a 
cheaper smartphone for the sake of market share", to "Apple wants to 
provide the best products, will not blindly pursue market share".<br />

Apple confirmed the interview had taken place and that it had 
contacted the Chinese newspaper about amending its original article, but
 had no further comment and declined to provide a transcript of the 
interview.<br />

A reporter at the Shanghai Evening News who identified himself as 
Huang Yinlong, whose byline appeared on the stories, said the paper had 
made some changes, as Schiller's remarks may not have been presented as 
clearly as possible.<br />

As well as deleting references to cheap smartphones, paraphrased 
statements attributed to Schiller in the original version were replaced 
with direct quotations.<br />

Asked if the paper had made the changes at Apple's request, Huang said that the paper had made the decision on its own.<br />

"We deliberated about it, and wanted to reflect (Schiller's) meaning 
in the interview more accurately, so we made some adjustments", said 
Huang, adding the interview was conducted in Beijing on Tuesday.<br />

The original story had quoted Schiller as saying that developing a 
cheaper smartphone to try and replace feature phones was not a direction
 in which the company wanted to head.<br />

That comment was amended in the new version of the story, which now 
cites Schiller as saying that while some manufacturers are moving toward
 such cheaper smartphones, "Apple has always focused on providing the 
best products for its consumers, we've never blindly chased market 
share."<br />

An operator at the Shanghai Evening News said the paper did not have a
 spokesperson. Queries for comment were referred to Editor-in-Chief Niu 
Yefang, whose phone went unanswered.<br />

Apple rarely addresses rumors about upcoming products, which often spur intense speculation. Earlier this week, the <a class="hidden_link" href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackboard/wall-street-journal">Wall Street Journal</a> cited anonymous sources as saying Apple could release a cheaper <a class="hidden_link" href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackboard/iphone">iPhone</a> as early as this year.<br />

Appetite.io Detects Apps On Your iPhone’s Homescreen So You Can Share Them With Others

Have you ever been curious about what apps other people are 
running on their iPhones, and specifically those which they’ve deemed 
awesome enough to warrant a coveted spot on their homescreen? If so, 
then you’ll probably get a kick out of <a href="http://appetite.io/" target="_blank">Appetite.io</a>, a new project from the creators of the simple messaging app for iOS called <a href="http://verbs.im/" target="_blank">Verbs.im</a>.<br />

Appetite.io uses a combination of computer vision and machine 
learning to “see” which apps are on your iPhone’s homescreen, based on a
 screenshot you either upload to the website or email in to 
“post@appetite.io” directly from the phone’s Camera Roll. The service 
then quickly analyzes the screenshot, identifies your apps, and provides
 a short URL to your phone’s homescreen page which you can tweet, email 
or share.<br />

The team quietly launched the service just this week, and it’s still 
fairly rough around the edges. So yes, it’s a beta product, but it’s 
kind of fun, too. Since its debut, users have shared over 1,000 
homescreens, and over 2,000 unique apps have been detected through user 
uploads. Appetite.io currently has the capability to detect 45,000 apps 
from the App Stores in five countries: the U.S., Canada, U.K., Germany 
and Japan.<br />

From these early tests, the company found that Weather was the 
least-used native app, and the second least-used was Clock. Google Maps 
was seen 3.5 times more often than Apple Maps. Facebook showed up in 
over 35% of the homescreens.<br />

Right now, Appetite.io’s homepage is showing off Ashton Kutcher’s phone’s homescreen, but co-founder <a href="http://about.me/kode" target="_blank">Bhasker Kode</a>,
 who created the service along with Chaitanya Pandit, tells us that 
Kutcher is not affiliated with the company, lest that give you the wrong
 idea.<br />

When testing the service earlier this week, it initially got several 
things wrong. In particular, it struggled with the ability to identify 
the Calendar app (it changes every day, making detection tougher, Kode 
said), and it got confused by my Google Reader “app,” which was actually
 just a homescreen icon to the mobile website. However, the team has 
been continually hacking away on the project, and has now addressed the 
Calendar issue and has improved its ability to detect apps no longer in 
iTunes. They’re now working to fix the problem of detecting iPhone 
folders correctly, which appears to be resolved as of this morning (at 
least for me, though your mileage may vary).<br />

Until all issues are addressed, in the meantime, if Appetite.io’s 
service incorrectly detects an app, you can simply click the close 
button next to it to remove it from the app list. When I ran my 
homescreen photo through the service again this morning, <a href="http://appetite.io/a/c37ea97a" target="_blank">it got things right</a>.<br />

The service is very basic for now – there’s no way to browse or 
search through the hundreds of homescreens others have uploaded, which 
would be half the fun of using something like this. But to be fair, the 
thing <em>is</em> only a few days old. These upgrades will come in time.<br />

Assuming Appetite.io ever really takes off, Kode says the tool could 
be used to “crunch behavior patterns” (meaning, profiling users), app 
discovery (i.e., people who installed this, also installed that), and 
gifting.<br />

Analyzing users’ app collections is hardly a new idea. A wide range 
of services, often in those in the app discovery space, have come up 
with different ways to do this over the years. <a href="http://homescreen.me/explore" target="_blank">Homescreen.me</a>, for example, is most <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5928202/homescreenme-shows-off-your-iphone-home-screen-and-apps" target="_blank">competitive</a> with Appetite.io, and far more developed. It even gives you short URLs with your <a href="http://homescreen.me/sarahintampa/iphone" target="_blank">username</a>. However, it doesn’t do the tricky business of actually detecting <em>what</em> those apps are on your phone, and then providing a list with links. It’s just pictures.<br />

Still, there are currently better ways to find new apps outside of app store search, including via tools like <a href="http://www.appsfire.com/" target="_blank">Appsfire</a>, <a href="http://discovr.info/about/" target="_blank">Discovr Apps</a>, <a href="http://hubblapp.com/" target="_blank">Hubbl</a>, <a href="http://xyo.net/" target="_blank">Xyo</a> and many others. The device, which would debut in late 2013 "at the earliest," is part
 of an effort to attract more customers from developing markets, <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-01-09/apple-said-to-develop-cheaper-iphone-model-for-late-2013.html" target="_blank"><em>Bloomberg</em> reported</a>, citing an unnamed source. Among them, Apple is particularly eyeing <a href="http://mashable.com/category/china/">China</a>.<br />

Last December, CEO Tim Cook said the country is "a very important market for us." At the time, <a data-crackerjax="#post-slider" href="http://mashable.com/2012/12/17/iphone-5-china-sales/">Apple had sold more than 2 million units of the iPhone in China</a>, setting a record for best first-weekend sales in the country.<br />

A lower-cost version of the iPhone would also help Apple compete with
 Google's Android phones, which are available in a wide range of prices.

As one of the mobile market's pricier smartphones, the <a href="http://mashable.com/category/iphone-5/">iPhone 5</a>
 starts at $199 for 16GB of storage with a two-year contract. There are 
also 32GB and 64GB models available for $299 and $399, respectively. In 
terms of its older phones, Apple now offers the 8GB iPhone 4 for free, 
while the 16GB iPhone 4S costs $99 (both requiring two-year contracts). <br />

The company has been developing a more affordable phone since "at least" February 2011, <em>Bloomberg</em> said. It has spoken to one or more major U.S. wireless carriers about its plans, the newspaper added.<br />

Earlier reports suggested that the <a data-crackerjax="#post-slider" href="http://mashable.com/2013/01/08/apple-cheaper-iphone/">lower-cost iPhone would look like a standard iPhone 5, but made with cheaper materials</a>. Polycarbonate would replace the aluminum shell, and other components could be sourced from parts designed for older iPhones.<br />

If the words “unlimited,” “iPhone,” and “no contract” are a few of your favorite things, then <a href="http://www.straighttalk.com/">Straight Talk Wireless</a>
 is ready to make your day. Starting on Friday, January 11, the carrier 
will be offering the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 on its $45 per month 
unlimited plan.

For that $45, you get yourself unlimited voice, texting, and data. Of 
course, it’s not without its tradeoffs. You’ll be buying the iPhone 
unlocked, which means unsubsidized—which, in turn, means more moolah 
upfront. You’ll also have a limit of which models you can choose from: 
the iPhone 5 is available only in 16GB—in white or black—for $649, while
 the 8GB iPhone 4, also in white or black, will cost $449. If you were 
eyeing an iPhone 4S, you’re out of luck. Straight Talk’s also offering 
an unlimited plan with unlimited international calling for $60 per 
month.

Additionally, the plan is available exclusively through <a href="http://walmart.com/iphone">Walmart</a>. However, the retail giant wants to get you into an iPhone <i>today</i>—so
 much so that it’s offering no-interest financing on the cost of the 
iPhone, which works out to a $25 fixed-monthly payment. That deal isn’t 
without its own caveats, though: You’ll need to use a Walmart credit 
card to purchase the phone in a store.

This isn’t the only option for those looking to go contract-free. You can also <a href="http://www.macworld.com/article/2017474/apple-begins-offering-unlocked-iphone-5-in-u-s.html">buy an unlocked phone directly from Apple</a>, and earlier in the week, T-Mobile CEO John Legere confirmed that his company would also be <a href="http://www.macworld.com/article/2024460/t-mobile-to-carry-iphone-but-without-subsidies.html">ending subsidies and offering no-contract plans in the next few months</a>—right around the time it also begins selling the iPhone.

In what’s sure to be disruptive to carriers like <a data-ls-seen="1" href="http://www.forbes.com/companies/att/">AT&T</a> and Verizon, Walmart is prepped to offer a no-contract option for <a data-ls-seen="1" href="http://www.forbes.com/companies/apple/">Apple</a>‘s iPhone 4 and iPhone 5, and they’re doing it at an incredibly affordable monthly cost.<br />
 
Straight Talk, Walmart’s pre-paid cell phone service, is operated by 
TracFone Wireless Inc. and offers consumers no-contract monthly service 
for data, text, and talk. The catch, as with most pre-paid services, is 
the full priced upfront cost of the phone. In this case, Apple’s 8GB 
iPhone 4 will retail for $449, and the 16GB iPhone 5 for $649.<br />
However, the monthly cost is where things get compelling: Just $45 
for unlimited data, unlimited text, and unlimited voice. Crank the plan 
up to $60 per month and Straight Talk augments your service with 
unlimited international calling to more than 1,000 destinations in <a data-ls-seen="1" href="http://www.forbes.com/places/mexico/">Mexico</a>, <a data-ls-seen="1" href="http://www.forbes.com/places/canada/">Canada</a>, <a data-ls-seen="1" href="http://www.forbes.com/places/india/">India</a>, and other countries. To put this in perspective, it’s $69.99 for <em>just</em> unlimited voice from AT&T.<br />
 
What else makes this a big deal? Typically pre-paid vendors operate 
with an inventory of older phones (for example, Virgin Mobile just got 
Samsung’s Galaxy S II). The fact that Walmart will offer iPhone 5 — a 
device only 4 months old — without a contract could put the hurt on 
carriers like Verizon and AT&T.<br />
<br />
When you do the comparative math, things get even more interesting. 
On AT&T, having an iPhone 5 with a 2 year contract and a plan 
supporting unlimited voice, unlimited text, and 5GB of data will cost 
consumers roughly $3550. With Straight Talk’s plan, cost of ownership 
over 2 years is only $1729, and that includes the full price of the 
iPhone 5.<br />
 
This is indeed a game changer. The iPhone 4 and 5 prepaid plans will 
be available at Walmart at retail and online beginning tomorrow, January
 11th 2013.<br />

iPhone 5 comes to Walmart and Straight Talk

Walmart and Straight Talk Wireless will soon be carrying the iPhone 5
 starting January 11. It will only be offered at its full, contract-free
 price, however, Straight Talk is offering an unlimited talk, text, and 
data plan for $45 per month, significantly cheaper than the plans 
available from the major US carriers.<br />

In addition to Straight Talk’s plan, Walmart will be offering 
customers with a Walmart Credit Card a financing plan that will allow 
customers to pay $25 per month to avoid the large up front cost. 
According to a statement  <a href="http://news.walmart.com/news-archive/2013/01/08/walmart-straight-talk-to-offer-the-iphone-on-its-45-no-contract-unlimited-plan">Walmart</a> representative, the total cost of the plan will be lower than most plans from one of the major national carriers:<br />

 and having the latest technology,” said Seong Ohm, senior vice 
president of Entertainment for Walmart U.S. “Now customers can have the 
coveted iPhone with unlimited talk, text and data without a contract for

first financing offer.”<br />

This is just the latest in the expansion of the iPhone to a variety 
of US carriers. While carriers like Straight Talk and Virgin Mobile use 
the networks of the major carriers, they are able to offer customers 
lower prices on plans while usually charging full price for the handset.
 The Straight Talk/Walmart deal is unique in offering customers the 
ability to pay for the cost of the iPhone over time without requiring a 
contract. Straight Talk Wireless uses AT&T’s network, and at this 
time it isn’t clear whether or not customers on this plan will be able 
to access AT&T’s LTE network.<br />

<span class="article-leader">A rumored contract-free, low-cost iPhone 
geared toward emerging markets could net Apple $6.5 billion in revenue 
this year, one analyst believes.</span><br />
Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray believes there's a good chance Apple will 
in fact release a new low-cost iPhone model this year. Unlike <a href="http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/01/08/wsj-cheaper-iphone-could-debut-in-2013">new reports</a>
 that have claimed the device could be priced between $99 and $149, he 
expects Apple will charge around $199 for a new unsubsidized iPhone.<br /><br />
At that price, the new, less expensive iPhone model would be a 
significant discount over what Apple currently offers: A contract-free 
iPhone 4 costs $450 in the U.S., while taxes bring the cost up to $490 
in China and $750 in Brazil.<br /><br />
Current iPhone models have gross margin between 55 and 60 percent, aided
 by carrier subsidies. Munster believes that Apple's contract-free 
iPhone with a price around $200 would instead have gross margins around 
30 percent.<br /><br />

He also believes that a cheaper iPhone would be a popular option in 
Apple's lineup: Munster's sales forecast for the end of 2013 calls for 
30 percent of all iPhone sales to be the rumored lower-price model.<br /><br />
Accordingly, he sees the average selling price of the iPhone falling from its current level of around $640 to about $520.<br /><br />
In Munster's models, the $6.5 billion in revenue a hypothetical 
inexpensive iPhone would add to Apple's bottom line would be about 3 
percent of the company's total revenue.<br /><br />
He believes that Apple's previous entries into lower priced market 
segments have demonstrated a "measurable positive impact on overall 
revenue" for the company. In the past, Apple has expanded its product 
lineup with the iPad mini and iPod mini, while the iPad itself <a href="http://appleinsider.com/articles/11/10/18/ipad_sales_cannibalizing_macs_but_record_sales_offset_problem.html">has cannibalized sales</a> of Apple's higher-priced Macs.

Following a report by <a href="http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20130108PD206.html" target="_blank">Digitimes</a> this morning citing industry sources, The Wall St. Journal is today <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324391104578230060513922882.html" target="_blank">confirming</a> that it, too, hears that Apple is working on a low-cost version of the iPhone, which could launch as early as this year.<br />

The phone could be made cheaper by using less expensive parts, the 
WSJ says. For example, it could use a different shell made of 
polycarbonate plastic, or parts recycled from older iPhone models. This 
isn’t the first time the WSJ has reported that Apple was exploring such a
 device – <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704657104576142262842435544.html" target="_blank">in 2011, it issued a similar report</a>, again citing the ever-present “people familiar with the matter” as sources.<br />

Such a device would be ideal in targeting developing markets, <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2012/12/13/china-gets-the-iphone-5-but-will-this-help-apples-market-share/">including China</a>,
 where the iPhone’s high price is a concern. According to the WSJ 
report, Apple has been developing this cheaper iPhone for years, but 
could not decide how to move forward with the device.<br />

If the report of the newer, cheaper iPhone is true, such a launch 
would position Apple to better compete with Android smartphones in 
emerging regions, where the move to smartphones is still a battle to be 
won. Android currently has the advantage, thanks to the variety of 
devices that can run the Android operating system, including those that 
come closer to matching the price point of the “feature phones” that 
users in these areas are upgrading from.<br />

As mobile analytics provider <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2011/12/23/flurry-largest-addressable-markets-for-mobile-developers-in-2012-include-india-china-japan-u-s/">Flurry noted a year ago</a>,
 the largest addressable markets for mobile apps in 2012 included India,
 China, and Japan, among others. China in particular saw quick gains in 
2012, with the country having <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2012/03/21/china-leads-world-in-new-ios-android-activations-app-sessions-up-1126-over-last-year/">climbed</a> into the No. 2 spot in terms of new iOS and Android activations as of March. China is now <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2012/10/25/apple-q4-ceo-tim-cook-says-china-revenues-were-5-7b-up-26-year-on-year-now-15-of-all-of-apples-sales/">Apple’s second-largest market</a>, but iPhone sales are <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2012/03/15/why-china-matters-to-apple-others-this-year-it-will-become-the-worlds-largest-smartphone-market/">losing traction to competition</a> from Samsung and Nokia, plus domestic handset makers like Huawei, ZTE, and Lenovo.<br />

That being said, sales of the iPhone 5′s launch in China were <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2012/12/14/iphone-5-sales-in-china-reportedly-robust-despite-lack-of-lineups/">reportedly strong</a>, despite reports about the lack of lineups for the device. <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2012/12/16/iphone-5-sells-more-than-2m-units-during-first-weekend-in-china/">Apple later said</a> it sold over 2 million units the first weekend.<br />

According to the Digitimes report, the low-cost iPhone would have a 
larger screen than the iPhone 5, which doesn’t sound right – that would 
be costly. Digitimes, however, is more hit-or-miss in terms of its 
reporting. The WSJ, on the other hand, gives the rumor more credence.<br />
